Grocery Stores and Restaurants

It’s important to remember that the majority of residents will be able to get their food as they do today, going to the grocery store or local markets, and we encourage restaurants to shift to providing more to go, drive-thru, and pickup options. Find more curbside pickup, delivery, and take out options sourced by the San Jose Downtown Association, Silicon Valley Organization, and Dining at a Distance. You can also support local restaurants by purchasing a gift card for participating establishments. In addition, Silicon Valley — through a partnership with DoorDash — is #OpenForDelivery and we will continue to support our local restaurants taking advantage of these no-contact options: www.openfordelivery.com. For South Bay restaurants looking to join the DoorDash marketplace, the process begins by visiting get.doordash.com.

Restaurants/venues who have decided not to stay open for delivery or take away can redeploy food resources through Joint Venture Silicon Valley’s Food Recovery Council to distribute their suddenly-surplus food to families in need of meals. Restaurants or caterers interested in allocating surplus food can contact robin@jointventure.org for more information.

As stated in the shelter in place mandate, residents are permitted to take essential trips, purchasing necessary items from grocery stores, pharmacies, and hardware stores. Please continue to buy normal quantities of these items on the same schedule you normally do. This will ensure that there is enough for everyone.

We’re encouraged by the community spirit of South Bay businesses, like Zanotto’s Markets, who created a “senior hour” from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m for the 60+ community to shop before the general public is allowed inside. We hope to see more businesses with essential items follow suit to keep our vulnerable residents safe and encourage social distancing. Find more resources for senior hours here.
